TTS Spring 2024 Science Night

The Nokesville Science Night took place on Thursday, April 11th, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. During the event, students’ infographics from our TTS project were proudly displayed in the hallway near the main entrance. We showcased 22 infographics from 5th-grade classes and 16 infographics from 4th-grade classes.

Our teachers promoted the event within the school community, encouraging other teachers and staff to view the students’ infographics. They also invited students to be present in the hallway from 6:00 to 6:30 to present their posters to visitors, although this was not mandatory. Despite the optional nature of the presentations, around six students arrived early to show their infographics to family members. By 6:00, the hallway was bustling with activity, with approximately 15 groups of students presenting their infographics.

The students demonstrated a deep understanding of their infographics, effectively explaining all the diagrams and figures included. One student, in particular, showed great awareness of her audience, consisting of 4th-grade students. She explained that although the topic included extensive information from the SOL standards, she focused on the knowledge she had gained from her tests.

The event also featured multilingual elements. One student from a Spanish-speaking family had her mother excitedly engaging with the infographic, which included Spanish text. During the presentation, when asked if she could say “iceberg” in Spanish, the student, although not fluent in Spanish, learned the word from her mother, who then taught it to the other students.
