TTS Project Summary
Transmodalising with Technology in Science (TTS) is a research project funded by the Spencer Foundation from Fall 2022 through Fall 2024. The primary goal of TTS was to build instructional capacity among science and ESOL teachers by integrating infographics alongside multilingual students’ home languages and cultural resources into science education.
Throughout the three-year initiative, our research team collaborated closely with ten dedicated teachers from Neabsco Elementary School and The Nokesville School within Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS). Teachers received comprehensive professional development, both online and in-person, from infographic expert Cynthia Graville, enhancing their skills in infographic-based teaching and learning.
As a result, the innovative transmodalising pedagogy and infographic strategies were successfully implemented across nine science classrooms, directly involving over 200 students. Students actively created infographics for various educational purposes, significantly enhancing their science comprehension and fostering language development.
The results of the project have led to multiple publications and conference presentations. The research team presented findings at regional conferences such as WATESOL and VATESOL, as well as international conferences including AERA and TESOL. Additionally, we have published a book chapter and have multiple manuscripts currently under review or revision.
TTS Mission
TTS research helps science and ESOL teachers to build instructional capacity by integrating infographics as well as multilingual students’ home language and cultural resources in science instruction. TTS team provides teachers with ongoing support in designing and implementing TTS-informed science lessons with their multilingual learners to enhance students’ STEM learning experiences and outcomes.
TTS Vision
Outcomes from the project include (1) a new knowledge base of transmodalising pedagogy in science/STEM instruction for young adolescent multilingual learners, (2) the development of an instructional model that aligns to disciplinary practices by integrating digital infographics in a standards-aligned science curriculum, (3) research dissemination through presentation and publication about the TTS instructional model, and (4) expanded potential for future research at a larger scale on the effectiveness of transmodalising pedagogy for multilingual learners’ engagement and achievement in STEM learning.
Spencer Foundation
TTS research is funded by the Spencer Foundation. The Spencer Foundation has been a leading funder of education research since 1971 and is the only national foundation focused exclusively on supporting education research.
