Empowering Upper Elementary Multilingual Learners in Science Using Infographics
This research chapter delves into the collaborative efforts of educators to empower PK-12 multilingual learners (MLs) through a transmodalising, multiliteracies approach in the context of upper elementary science education. The project, conducted in a mid-Atlantic state, focused on the transformation of traditional science fair projects into engaging infographics. This transition fostered student agency, allowing MLs at different stages of English language proficiency (ELP) to connect deeply with their investigations. By contextualizing their inquiries, students recognized the broader implications of their research, enhancing their engagement and understanding. This work underscores the potential of a transmodalising, multiliteracies approach to transform science education, making it more inclusive and engaging for culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

Upcoming AERA 2025 Annul Meeting
Our paper, “Exploring Diverse Methods of Using Infographics in STEM Classrooms for Multilingual Learners,” submitted for consideration for the 2025 AERA Annual Meeting has been accepted! AERA received more than 11,000 submissions this year. Our paper has been placed in a Roundtable Session titled, “Language as Power for Breaking Barriers in Science: Translanguaging and Multilingual Strategies”. The program schedule will be available on January 17, 2025.
2024 VATESOL Conference
At 2024 VATESOL Conference, the TTS research team along with two teacher participants – MS. Angela Speights and Ms. Abigail G. Schuhmacher, presented the study “The Future of Multilingual Education: Innovative Approaches for Supporting Multiliteracies“. This practice-oriented session highlighted the essential characteristics and practical implications of a transmodalising pedagogy for PK-12 teachers of multilingual learners (MLs). The two elementary teachers shared their experience with engaging MLs in creating transmodal infographics to reflect science learning.
2024 TESOL International Convention & Expo
TTS research team presented our study titled “Implementing Transmodal Pedagogy in Elementary School Science Classrooms Through Infographics,” in 2024 TESOL International Convention & Expo. Our presentation was scheduled for March 21st with approximately 15 attendees joining our session. During the presentation, our attendees explored the use of students’ native languages (L1) in content classrooms, acknowledging its potential to facilitate peer collaboration and visual storytelling.
2023 Fall WATESOL Conference
The TTS research team presented the results from the first phase of our project at the 2023 Fall WATESOL Conference. In our presentation, we explored the transformative potential of a transmodalising pedagogy using infographics to empower multilingual learners (MLs) in upper elementary science education. We discussed our research project where ESOL and science teachers partnered to facilitate meaningful science learning experiences for MLs through the creation of infographics.
